China's chipboard exports have grown dramatically in recent years, becoming a new engine for wood-based panel trade. Sustained RCEP dividends have made Southeast Asia a core demand hub, optimizing the industry's foreign trade structure.
Chipboard's strong exports drive growth. In 2024, exports reached 528,600 tons (+34.40% YoY, matching 2021 peak) with value at $294M (+8.49% YoY). Capacity and quality upgrades fuel this: 2024 capacity hit 64.15M m³ (+21.7%), with intelligent processes and formaldehyde-free adhesives meeting global standards. Regular and OSB exports rose 28.60% and 50.48% respectively, lifting total wood-based panel exports to a record 10.0551M tons.
RCEP boosts exports via regional tariff cuts, trade facilitation and industrial chain advantages. Asia accounts for 65.63% of chipboard exports, with Southeast Asia in high demand. 2024 exports to Vietnam rose 20% and to Peru doubled, forming a "stable traditional, booming emerging" pattern. RCEP rules cut barriers, improve efficiency and strengthen China's regional supply chain role.
Southeast Asia, with robust demand, is the core growth engine. Its 2024 wood-based panel market hit $2.65B, projected to grow at 5.7% CAGR (2025-2032). Urbanization and furniture expansion drive demand; local eco-policies align with China's green chipboard shift, favoring eco-friendly products. Chinese enterprises use complete chains to provide customized supply and consolidate shares.
Looking forward, optimized chipboard capacity, more high-end products, deepened RCEP dividends and Southeast Asian demand upgrades will drive China's wood-based panel trade to deepen market presence, shift to high-quality growth and maintain global leadership.
